In this 1965 photo, these young lads are enjoying a sweet treat, sugar in
its raw, elemental form. Sugar is one of the major agricultural products
of Tay Ninh, along with cassava (tapioca) rubber, and exotic fruits.
In these contemporary photos (c. 2016) the harvested cane is loaded aboard ox or water buffalo carts in the fields, then transferred to trucks or trailers and then on to the sugar mill..
TTC Sugar, formerly Société Bourbon de Tay Ninh, is reputed to be the largest sugar producer in the country. It grinds the raw cane and reduces it to its intermediate syrup-like state and further refines it to the white crystalline form marketable as table sugar.
The fibrous residue (bagasse) is frequently burned in a boiler as a
power source.
This is a publicity photo of the TTC mill in Tay Ninh from the company's
website.
